St. Louis-Based Start-Up Beverage Company Receives Investment Capital From Kirin Holdings
Global beverage company from Japan provides investment capital to Nawgan Products, LLC
ST. LOUIS, MO (August 23, 2011) – Nawgan Products, LLC, the makers of Nawgan, the innovative functional brain health beverage, and Japan’s Kirin Holdings announce Kirin’s investment in the LLC. The investment represents Kirin Holdings’ minority interest in Nawgan Products, LLC and will fund growth initiative plans throughout North America. Kirin Holdings is a world leader in beer and other beverage production in Japan, with annual sales of $25 billion.
“It is our great honor to be part of this opportunity and be able to provide a new value for the ever-evolving health drink market in the United States through profoundly unique Nawgan products.” said Mr. Senji Miyake, President and CEO of Kirin Holdings.
Nawgan was developed by clinical neuropsychologist, Dr. Robert Paul, a local university professor. The product was launched into St. Louis in 2010 with seed funding provided in part by the St. Louis-based Biogenerator and angel investors including beverage veterans from the St. Louis area.
“Our early success is the direct result of the opportunity Walgreens and Straub’s provided with valuable cooler space to an unproven product,” said Jim von der Heydt, Nawgan’s CEO. “This is a St. Louis company with an innovative formula created by a local professor. The support from BioGenerator and the St. Louis Arch Angels, enabled us to launch the product and prove its consumer appeal. Nawgan is just the latest example of how our community is working together to build new companies.”
The St. Louis investment group BioGenerator provided funding for the introduction of Nawgan. “This new investment will allow Nawgan to add management staff with the expertise to support national expansion,” said Dan Broderick, a BioGenerator Senior Fellow and Nawgan Board Member. “It’s a big win for Nawgan and St. Louis. The BioGenerator is delighted to be part of the ongoing future of Nawgan with its new associate, Kirin Holdings.”
Available in Red Berries Caffeinated, Berry Non-Caffeinated and Tarocco Orange Caffeinated, Nawgan is low in calories, sodium, and contains no preservatives. The key ingredient, Cognizin™ works in harmony with the other ingredients in Nawgan to support alertness and concentration. Studies have demonstrated that healthy adults who used Cognizin™ daily exhibited significant improvements in performance on tests of alertness and concentration, as well as brain activity visualized on sophisticated imaging techniques.
Nawgan is earning accolades not only in the St. Louis area but also throughout the worldwide beverage industry and was recently honored by Beverage Innovation Magazine as Best Concept Drink and Best Alertness Drink at the seventh annual InnoBev Global Beverages Summit in Washington, D.C., besting more than 150 functional drink entries from other countries. It is this innovation and the brand’s potential for market preemption that solidified interest from Kirin Holdings.
Nawgan is currently found on shelves at more than 300 stores across the greater St. Louis region, including Walgreens, Straub’s Fine Grocers, Dierberg’s Markets and Shop’n’Save. The company is led by a seasoned Board of Directors including co-founding members Peter Wodtke and James S. Tonkin, along with Dan Broderick, Toru Yoshimura from Kirin, and CEO and President Jim von der Heydt.

Beverage Innovation Magazine
Honors Nawgan As Best Concept and Best Alertness Drink
ST. LOUIS (April 5, 2011) – Nawgan was the big winner at the 2011 Beverage Innovation functional drinks Awards, announced March 31 at a special gala during the 7th InnoBev Global Beverages Summit in Washington, D.C. Beverage Innovation Magazine and Zenith International’s functional drinks newsletter awarded Nawgan with awards for Best Overall Concept and Best Alertness Drink. Nawgan was developed in Saint Louis and offers consumers improved concentration and focus in an all natural beverage. Nawgan bested more than 150 entries from companies in the international functional drinks industry.

Internally we have always recognized Nawgan as award-winning given the credibility of the science behind the ingredients, the doses of those ingredients in every can, and our use of an aluminum can to protect the ingredients from degradation due to light and air. It is really fantastic that the beverage industry is recognizing these achievements as well,” said Nawgan creator and neuropsychologist Dr. Rob Paul. “We’re thrilled that industry leaders see how the highest quality science can be successfully brought to market in a form that resonates with consumers.”
These awards demonstrate how ingredient progress meets the consumer on-shelf,” said Beverage Innovation magazine managing editor Claire Phoenix. “Advances in anti-ageing, drinks that help prevent iron deficiency in pregnancy, and those that provide natural energy or can help you get to sleep, all indicate a move to bringing well researched science into our daily lives, as vouched for by the nutritionists on our judging panel.”
The annual conference and Beverage Innovation Awards gather members of the beverage industry from around the world to discuss and see firsthand the progress of the industry. Every year, major brands such as Pepsi, Coca-Cola and Snapple attend the summit, providing start-up companies like Nawgan the opportunity to showcase their products in front of industry powerhouses.
These awards show that beverage industry leaders recognize Nawgan a leader in the Alertness beverage category,” said Nawgan CEO Jim von der Heydt. “Consumers agree as sales continue to climb in the Saint Louis market.”
Nawgan and 150 other beverage companies across 22 countries submitted products for the Beverage Innovation functional drinks Awards. Categories ranged from natural functional, energy, alertness and beauty drinks, to packaging and ingredients. All the companies entered in the awards will be featured in the 2011 Beverage Innovation functional drinks Awards Showcase magazine included in the May issue of Beverage Innovation.

Visit With Nawgan Brain Trust – BevNET.com Editor, John Craven
“Doctor developed”
seems to be a statement that is turning up on beverage labels on an
ever-increasing basis. Nawgan, a “brain beverage,” was indeed developed
by a doctor, but it features an interesting, and important point of
difference: in the case of Nawgan, the function of the drink is exactly
in line with the doctor’s area of expertise. Click to read more from the interview with Nawgan inventor, Dr. Rob Paul and CEO Jim von der Heydt.
